Political parties welcome Medium-Term Budget policy statement

CAPE TOWN - Most political parties have welcomed the fuel levy reduction that Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has announced.

But it's clear that more work still needs to be done.

Action SA’s Athol Trollip said interim relief for the fuel levy is welcomed by millions of South Africans who are feeling the pinch.

Equally, it recognised SARS's performance for the relief.

“If it wasn't for SARS's performance, we wouldn't have been able to have this R10billion cushion that has been provided,” he said.

DA’s Kingsley Wakelin said that, as a party, they support the current submission that was made by the minister.

“The minister has laid a foundation for this country now to move to the next frontier and the next frontier is clear structural reform and economic growth. We cannot grow employment on a 1.2 percent growth rate. It is time that we move to a 3.5 percent growth rate, and for that we need serious reform.”

Meanwhile, BOSA leader Mmusi Maimane said they had advocated for the relief. But, he  acknowledged that a lot more work needs to be done.
