Power cuts impacting water infrastructure

Joburg Water says rolling blackouts are to blame for Stage 2 water restrictions.

JOHANNESBURG - Rolling blackouts, water restrictions and a heatwave.

Gauteng residents are dealing with a number of issues and it seems the situation might get worse.

Several Rand Water pump stations, supplying a large number of Gauteng metros, have implemented Stage 2 water restrictions as reservoirs and towers run dry.

Rolling blackouts have also been escalated to Stage 4 as more generation units have broken down.

''We are monitoring what is happening at our reservoir’s levels. We are also raising campaigns to say use water sparingly so that every person can have water," said Makenosi Maroo, Rand Water spokesperson.

"So it’s a bit difficult to say it's going to be worse or better, but if we all pull together and conserve water we will all have water."

Meanwhile, the Helen Joseph and Rahima Moosa Hospitals in Johannesburg are battling to cope as taps remain dry.
