Presidency condemns political murders

MIDRAND - The Director-General in the Presidency, Phindile Baleni, has condemned political killings.

She warned that police will deal with those responsible for these violent crimes.

“It is quite sad that certain people believe that their best way to express their political opinions is by killing others.

“The democracy in the country enables us to choose our leaders at different points, and there are ways to allow for democratic principal transition between the different administrations or when people step down from positions,” she said.

Baleni's remarks come amid growing concerns about political killings. Natjoints Co-Chairperson Tebello Mosikili said they recorded 20 murders involving political representatives, party members and supporters, with seven arrests having been effected.

Mosikili indicated that SAPS has prioritised these investigations.

Baleni called on South Africans to be responsible, and if one wants to express an opinion, this must be done through established mechanisms and public participation.

“People must step up, and we must call those people out who want to use other means when we have such a strong and robust democracy."
