Pretoria sends new trade deal to Washington

JOHANNESBURG - Pretoria will be sending a new trade offer to Washington amid the ongoing stand-off.

Government has been outlining measures to mitigate the impact of Trump's 30% tariffs which came into effect last week.

The Minister of Trade and Industry Parks Tau says cabinet has approved that South Africa submits a revised offer as a basis for negotiations with the US.

The new offer according to Tau builds on the previous offer submitted in May 2025.

Tau was giving an update during a press briefing on Tuesday where he gave an update on progress in continued engagement with the US to secure a deal and reduce
the tariffs.

He also gave an update on diversification of exports to alternate markets, economic response
package to vulnerable companies and workers, trade defense against import surge
and dumping and finally demand side interventions.

Meanwhile Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen emphasised that South Africa’s trade with the US benefits both sides, especially when it comes to citrus.

According to the Minister, fruit fills gaps in the American market without threatening local producers.
