Progress in compensating TRC victims - Minister Ntshavheni

JOHANNESBURG - Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni said government is making progress in compensating TRC victims.

Ntshavheni said Cabinet has received Parliament’s updated report on reparations, which includes financial payments and other forms of support for affected families.

"Cabinet received and considered Parliament's approved annual update on the implementation of the TRC recommendations in June 2003. 

"Parliament approved the granting of reparations to TRC-identified victims. These include final ones of reparation, a payment of R30 000, medical benefits and other forms of social assistance, symbols and monuments and community rehabilitation as part of healing the wounds of the past.

"Cabinet noted progress in the implementation of these measures, including the promulgation of the regulations by the President governing ones of individual reparations, exhumation, reburial and symbolic burial of victims, basic education assistance, higher education and training assistance and housing assistance.

"The outstanding draft regulations relating to health and community rehabilitation are at various stages of finalization. In addition, 17,455 of the 21,676 TRC-identified victims who applied for one of the individual repatriations received their 30,000 grant. The total amount paid for the individual reparation is nearly R500 million."
