Ramaphosa warns of impact of illegal immigration

JOHANNESBURG - President Cyril Ramaphosa has raised concerns about illegal immigration.

Ramaphosa said illegal immigration places pressure on public services and weakens the state’s ability to manage resources effectively.

He further added that stronger border management and law enforcement are needed to address the problem.

Ramaphosa made these comments during today's Presidency's Budget Vote in the National Assembly on Tuesday.

According to Ramaphosa, if the issue of migration is managed and regulated well, it can help drive economic growth and opportunity for all.

"We have seen how illegal immigration into our country can put pressure on our public services and undermine our efforts to create decent work for all. As announced in the State of the Nation Address, government is taking decisive action to address this challenge. 

Ramaphosa said efforts to crack down on violations of immigration laws continues/ 

This includes increasing inspections of workplaces and prosecuting employers who violate labor laws. 

"We are strengthening border security, stamping out corruption in the immigration system," Ramaphosa said.
