JOHANNESBURG - On the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution by the Constitutional Assembly, the Apex Court chose to deliver a judgment that could end President Cyril Ramaphosa's political career.
Ramaphosa was a central figure in the drafting of the country’s supreme law.
Now his political future hangs in the balance after the Constitutional Court paved the way for a parliamentary impeachment process.
The Apex Court ruled that the National Assembly acted unlawfully when it voted against adopting a panel report that found that Ramaphosa had a prima facie case to answer in relation to the Phala Phala saga.

The ruling now clears the way for a full parliamentary inquiry, where Ramaphosa will be required to answer detailed questions about the Phala Phala matter.
While Ramaphosa has reaffirmed his commitment to the Constitution, the EFF has already written to the National Assembly Speaker, demanding timelines for establishing an impeachment committee.
