Rand Water flags areas consuming more water than allocated

JOHANNESBURG - Reduce your water consumption or face forced supply reduction.

That’s the warning from Rand Water as its system faces increased strain.

Municipalities across Gauteng have been blasted for overconsumption.

The City of Joburg ranks high on that list with usage of around 1,801 megalitres of water compared to its allocation of 1,356 megalitres.

The City of Tshwane consumes an average of 798 megalitres while being allocated 667 megalitres.

The City of Ekurhuleni just misses its threshold of 1,022 megalitres with consumption of 1,005.

Other municipalities on the list include Mogale City, Emfuleni, Madibeng, Merafong and Lesedi.

Rand Water said it has repeatedly warned municipalities about the high consumption levels.

The utility also said it held ongoing meetings focused on mitigation strategies and identifying additional measures to strengthen the water supply system.

But these efforts have not yielded any results.

'Persistent high consumption in certain areas continues to undermine the sustainable balance of supply across the network,' the utility says.
