Residents flee villages as criminals prey on elderly women

CABA VILLAGE, EC - Elderly women in Caba village, in the Eastern Cape, are being preyed on by criminals.

Too many have been robbed, raped and murdered. The area's traditional leader calls it a "no-go area".

Nkosi Zithobile Matiwane, who leads the Caba Administrative Area, says residents of the 10 villages under his care feel abandoned and helpless.

The situation has become so dire that one village, Sabonkolo, has been deserted.

Matiwane says the area relies on the Sulenkama Police Station, which covers 84 villages with just three operational police vans. The station's three other vehicles are not roadworthy.

A gender-based violence activist suggests residents need education about rape and sexual abuse.

eNCA's Nceba Ntlanganiso had to be escorted by the police into the village to file this report.
