Residents of Maxwell Court in JHB demand repairs, not relocation

JOHANNESBURG - The City of Johannesburg declared Maxwell Court unsafe years ago and has since been attempting to relocate residents.

But for many who are being asked to leave, the alternative accommodation is simply not an option. They said it was too small and too far from the schools, clinics and essential services they rely on.

Residents said they're being forced to choose between dangerous living conditions and leaving the homes many have occupied for decades.

They claim the municipality has allowed the building to fall into disrepair, and is using its deteriorating state to pressure them into relocating.

Now, after years of complaints, the community has turned to Chapter 9 institutions, including the Office of the Public Protector, in the hope it intervenes

eNCA reached out to the City of Johannesburg for comment but did not receive a response in time for broadcast.
