Residents must stay in touch after elections

JOHANNESBURG - The Joburg Crisis Alliance saw the build-up to 4 November as an opportune time to host their 10th Summit.

Sithembile Mbete from the Public Affairs Research Institute was one of the panellists at the gathering.

She said residents frustrated with poor service delivery have to keep engaging politicians long after the elections.

" What came out of the conversation today is that we really need to be engaged as residents throughout this period, not just the election, but really watching to see who's going to be on our ward committees and electing those ward committees, paying attention to who becomes the MMCs and holding those people accountable.

"Because those are the people that are responsible for each of the portfolios that are responsible for delivering water, for delivering, you know, for making pick-it-up function, etc. Then really paying attention to the budget processes so that it can be then easier for us to monitor those budgets once that they have been passed.

"And so, the sense that we must feel a sense of ownership of the city the entire time and not only respond to the politicians as they come and seek our votes before elections."
