Residents take to the streets over dry taps

BRIXTON - Residents from Mayfair, Crosby and Fordsburg took their fight for reliable water supply to the streets on Saturday, protesting persistent shortages.

The disruptions have left communities frustrated, with households and businesses struggling without reliable access to water. The protest adds to mounting pressure on authorities to address the worsening water crisis across parts of Johannesburg and Pretoria.

“Unfortunately, it’s just getting worse and worse. The frustration is actually getting worse. We have Slovo down the road. They have running water everyday. So, how is it that they can support and give the informal settlement water, but they can’t give the people that are paying rates and taxes water. Where is the answers for that?”

Brixton resident Yunus Suliman said the situation is very frustration.

“I’ve been a resident of this area for almost 30 years now. This issue has only risen in the last 5 years. What is ironic is that when Thapelo Amad from Al Jama-ah was the mayor, we had a meeting here at the reservoir. At that stage, Dada Morero was an MMC, he was also there. So, he was aware of this problem 5-years ago.

"The problem, in my opinion, is at the reservoir here. So, those areas that get fed by the reservoir have been impacted all the time. For the last 6 days we had no water. It came on yesterday. It went off again in the evening and we were sitting with a situation. But the point to what we’re saying is, if we’re paying for a service that we’re not getting then we want to know from the mayor, for the last five years, what has he done in that interim.”
