CAPE TOWN - The South African Policing Union says it is disappointed that Anti-Gang Unit officers accused of murder in Cape Town have been denied bail.
SAPU National spokesperson Lesiba Thobakgale said, "It is disappointing and worrisome that police officers who work for the state, who it is known where they stay, and where they work, their pension is being held through the GPF by the employer - there is no way where you would say that they are a flight risk in any way."
"We need to remember that the purpose of an arrest is to bring somebody before the court in order for them to answer," he said.
The union subscribes to the notion that anyone is innocent until proven guilty.
Thobakgale said, "Everything is still allegations until one is proven guilty by the court of law. The processes of court, the trial itself, will deal with the merits of the case."
