SADAG reports surge in mental health calls over festive season

JOHANNESBURG - The festive season is often seen as a time for family and happiness.

But for those who have lost loved ones or are far from family, it can be a period marked by loneliness and depression.

Financial strain can also add to stress during this time.

The South African Depression and Anxiety Group has reported a surge in calls over the holidays.

SADAG projects manager and spokesperson Roshni Parbhoo-Seetha says between 2,000 and 3,000 calls were received per day during the festive season.

“This clearly shows that mental health challenges remain widespread, especially during the festive season. Many people are expected to be happy and keep up appearances, but many have lost loved ones, are dealing with financial stress, or have become disconnected from family and are trying to find a way back during this period,” she said.

Parbhoo-Seetha added that many callers were struggling with loneliness, depression and anxiety, while others included matric learners and their parents ahead of the release of last year’s matric results.
