SAFTU welcomes Public Service Amendment Bill enactment

JOHANNESBURG - President Cyril Ramaphosa has signed the Public Service Amendment Bill into law.

The legislation seeks to separate political authority from administrative functions within government.

The change is widely seen as a significant step towards curbing corruption and addressing cadre deployment.

Critics say this has weakened the public sector.
SAFTU General Secretary Zwelinzima Vavi described it as a positive step toward public sector reform.

The bill basically does the following. It moves administration powers to director general. This has always been the case on paper. It's separate political office and administrative roles. This has always been the issue on paper. It prohibits senior officials from holding political office. This is new.”
