SAHPRA orders urgent recall of compounded weight-loss drug

JOHANNESBURG - South Africa's booming weight-loss drug market is under scrutiny.

The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (Sahpra) has issued an urgent recall of compounded GLP-1 medicines.

The products are compounded versions of popular weight-loss and diabetes medicines, including Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro.

Pretoria-based iDexis, which trades as Sentra Pharmacy, is the manufacturer.

Sahpra said the recall follows inspections that identified serious safety concerns.

Patients are urged to return the products to their healthcare provider or pharmacy for reimbursement.

The regulator has warned that any healthcare professional found dispensing, prescribing, or holding stock of the recalled products could face disciplinary action.
