JOHANNESBURG - The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) believes the Coalition Bill will play a major role in stabilising governing agreements.
Cabinet has approved the Municipal Structures Amendment Bill for submission to Parliament.
It aims to regulate coalition governments in municipalities and reduce political instability.
SALGA’s Lance Joel said residents across the country's major municipalities have been robbed of basic services because of persistent coalition chaos since the 2016 elections.
“It starts with the formation of coalitions. The formation itself is a narrow majority. The idea is to try to minimise those instabilities. It's a step in the right direction, but it will require political maturity,” Joel said.
