SANDF chief in hot water over Iran comments

JOHANNESBURG - The Department of International Relations and Cooperation has distanced itself from comments made by the SANDF chief about South Africa's supposed solidarity with Iran.

During a meeting with Iranian military officials, General Rudzani Maphwanya expressed his desire for political alignment between the nations.

South Africa finds itself walking the diplomatic tightrope, as closer ties with Iran would further strain its relations with the United States.

Dirco has clarified that the implementation of South Africa’s foreign policy is a function of only the Presidency. And that General Maphwanya does not represent the government's stance.

The Department of Defence has called the general's statements "unfortunate".
