JOHANNESBURG – Members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) deployed in Eldorado Park, Westbury and Sophiatown have undergone mission readiness training.
This is according to national police spokesperson, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe who said the readiness forms part of a joint training by both the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the SANDF.
Mathe said the training was a critical phase of the preparation ahead of the mobilisation and deployment of the combined task force.
Her remarks came after SANDF members raided several apartments in the areas on Wednesday.
In Westbury, residents gathered as the soldiers moved from door-to-door.
“Go door-to- door and find the guns’ one resident shouted.
While the deployment was welcomed, some residents hoped that it will not be a temporary measure.
Mathe said the deployment of the SANDF members was part of NATJOINS plan in heeding the President's call for both the SANDF and the SAPS to work together to fight crime in hotspot areas.
