SAPS clamp down on illegal miners
JOHANNESBURG - Police are clamping down on illegal miners in Johannesburg.
This week several bodies, allegedly linked to a turf war between different zama zama groups were found.
Dozens of alleged illegal miners were arrested during police operations west of Johannesburg on Thursday.
20 of them were found in possession of tools used for illegal mining.
Gauteng Police Commissioner, Elias Mawela, says the aim is the arrest of illegal mining kingpins.
At least 10 bodies were found in Bosmont, Johannesburg on Wednesday.
Mawela says he believes the victims were part of a turf war between different zama zama groups.
Meanwhile the Mineral resources and energy minister, Gwede Mantashe, says the issue is being dealt with.
Provincial police have promised to continue their operations.
Police believe a lot more needs to be done to permanently shut down the mines being used by the Zama Zama’s.
