SA’s electricity crisis | Farmers devastated by blackouts
JOHANNESBURG - Power cuts are having a major impact on food security in South Africa.
In January, a North West farmer lost an estimated R2-million worth of chickens he was due to sell to retail stores.
Hundreds of thousands of birds perished due to a cooling system that stopped working as a result of a power outage.
In December, KFC temporarily shut some of its outlets as a result of a shortage of supply caused by power cuts.
Herman du Preez is one of the entrepreneurs being featured on Wednesday night’s Checkpoint whose business‘s survival is under threat of collapse due to blackouts.
"We are trying to produce food for South Africa I think it’s an honourable job that we are trying to do," said Du Preez.
"But it's just very difficult at this moment and it’s not a very uplifting job at the moment.”
