SA’s housing crisis | Criticism over slash in grant funding

CAPE TOWN - Housing activists say Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana shouldn't have slashed grant funding for municipalities and provinces at the expense of poor people.

He announced the cuts during his Medium-term Budget Policy Statement last week.

Activists say he should rather have cut from the bloated cabinet and the "Blue Light Brigade" transporting and protecting ministers.

It's not only housing delivery that will be affected but also upgrades to informal settlements, including roads, electrification and the provision of taps.

There's fears that even bigger cuts will come with the main budget in February next year.
