SA’s water crisis | Silvertown residents hold key in water dispute

CHATSWORTH - A serious situation unfolding in Chatsworth, Western Cape.

Activists have filed a human rights violation case against the Swartland Municipality.

Nearly 2,000 residents in Silvertown have not had running water for over a week, and they say it's unacceptable.

They’ve now resorted to illegally reconnecting water and are refusing to return the key to officials.

A case has been opened at the Malmesbury Police Station.

In a written response, the Swartland Municipality says that the broader Chatsworth area has recently experienced occasional water outages due to a mix of increased water demand during the summer months and persistent vandalism of local infrastructure.

Officials also say that water levels at their reservoirs are extremely low, and they continue to ask locals to use water sparingly, while water tankers provide quick assistance.
