Service delivery | The price to pay for local government’s shortcomings

JOHANNESBURG - In attempts to keep their neighbourhoods functional in a time of dysfunctional municipalities, some communities are taking it upon themselves to address service delivery backlogs.

This includes spending thousands on security upgrades, getting rid of illegal dumping and the maintenance of parks and walkways, among other things.

This is all work that should be done with the rates and taxes paid to local government.

But, residents believe when the choice is doing that or watching your neighbourhood go into decline, it’s money well spent despite the financial sacrifice.
