Severe thunderstorms expected in parts of KZN

DURBAN – The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a warning for severe thunderstorms across several parts of KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday.

The affected areas include the Amajuba District Municipality , the Umzinyathi District Municipality, and the iLembe District Municipality.

KZN Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) spokesperson, Senzelwe Mzila, said the expected weather conditions may bring hail, strong winds, and heavy downpours.

“All of our teams are on the ground and have been placed on high alert. They will monitor areas that are highly susceptible to weather-related incidents,” said Mzila.

KZN has been prone to severe weather events that often result in damage to infrastructure and leave families displaced.

When asked about the province’s state of readiness to handle potential impacts if conditions worsen, Mzila admitted that some municipalities particularly those in rural areas continue to bear the brunt of climate change.

“Last year, during the spring and summer period, we estimated that around R3 billion worth of damage was suffered by the province. This included damage to roads, key infrastructure, and private homes.

"This happens at a time when the province continues to invest billions of rands in building infrastructure to ensure that communities are developed,” he explained.

Mzila adds that while the province faces an uphill battle there has been progress in their responsiveness.

“There is now better cooperation and working relations among all stakeholders to ensure that available resources are brought on board to help us respond effectively,” he says.
