SIU says collaboration with law enforcement "bearing fruit"

SIU spokesperson, Kaizer Kganyago, says the state lost in excess of R144-million, in recent illegal transactions.

JOHANNESBURG - The Special Investigating Unit says collaboration between law enforcement agencies is bearing fruit.

This follows preservation orders by the Asset Forfeiture Unit to take properties belonging to government officials who defrauded the Rural Development and Land Reform Department and the Deeds Registries.

They fraudulently transferred government property to private persons and private entities.

The SIU is in the process of reversing those properties back to government.

SIU spokesperson, Kaizer Kganyago, says the state lost in excess of R144-million, in these illegal transactions.

He said, "the people that were involved were colluding in the Deeds Office and purporting to be buying the land without paying a cent for it. They used it to benefit themselves."

"Those that have been transferred illegally must be transferred back to the state. If the state wants to sell it in an open market, they can do so in an open market not what they've done now."
