South Africa's plum varieties enter Chinese market

PRETORIA - South Africa marks a milestone in agricultural trade with the first shipment of locally bred plums, Ruby Star and African Delight, set for the Chinese market. 

Professor Bongani Ndimba, Acting Executive Manager for Crops, Natural Resource and Engineering at the Agricultural Research Council, said this was a historic event indeed.

He said these two plums are amongst other dozens of intellectual properties that the Agricultural Research Council, has produced over the years.

"Traditional market has always been the Northern Hemisphere countries because 80 percent of it is being exported. It is very good for our farmers. 

"It's definitely going to attract euros, yens and dollars. And it has shown quite a good performance in the last number of years. And now for the first time ever, we are entering the Chinese market," he said.
