Spotlight on ill-treatment of medical intern

JOHANNESBURG - Concerns over the treatment of medical interns continues to mount.

This following the death of 25-year-old doctor, Alu-lutho Mazwi, while on duty, raises concerns about the treatment of medical interns.

Dr Mazwi was diabetic, and had reported feeling unwell but was allegedly forced to report for duty.

Medical practitioner Dr Thandeka Malange says these news once again exposes the cracks in the system.

Among those is a health system that is understaffed.

"The lack of staff across the healthcare system, everyone is trying to patch up a dilapidated healthcare system and unfortunately we can not hold on anymore," she says

Malanga explains how the impact of this often results in burnout and at times it is hard for interns to speak out of fear.

She says the healthcare system is toxic and those who fall victim to this are the juniors.
