Surge of nosocomial infections in Gauteng

JOHANNESBURG - Almost 8,000 patients in Gauteng were infected while being treated in public hospitals.

Many of the infections are drug-resistant and life-threatening.

Charlotte Maxeke Hospital is the hardest hit, one in 10 patients leave sicker than when they arrived.

Poor hygiene, staff shortages, and broken equipment are to blame.

The Health Department admits the problem but says it’s working on fixes.
