Thabo Bester | G4S breached contract multiple times

A report by the Department of Correctional Services into Thabo Bester's escape revealed a number of breaches of contract by G4S.

JOHANNESBURG - A report by the Department of Correctional Services into Thabo Bester's escape revealed a number of breaches of contract by G4S.

The department says they are currently locked in litigation with the private security company over the decision to terminate their contract to run the Mangaung Correctional Centre.

Government is paying G4S R45-million a month to run the facility.

Justice Minister Ronald Lamola says the contract will continue until it expires in 2026.

The department's Pieter Killian said the contractor allowed a private vehicle to enter the centre without a gate pass and these actions constitute a breach of security measures.

"The contractor failed to ensure safe custody and rehabilitation of offenders, and it is our view that the conduct by the contractor has damaged the relationship between the two parties," Killian said.
