'They can imprison me, but they can never imprison my ideas' - Malema

KUGOMPO CITY - Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader, Julius Malema remains unshaken as he awaits his fate in the firearm discharge case, which has been in the courts for eight years.

Speaking outside the East London Regional Court, Malema said he would be going home on Thursday just like everyone else.

The hearing adjourned until Thursday morning as aspects of the sentence are being discussed.

Malema was convicted in October for violating the Firearms Control Act, after firing live rounds during his party's birthday celebrations in 2018.

The State wants Malema jailed for 15 years. But whatever the verdict is, Malema has remained steadfast in the notion that his team will appeal the case to the highest court.

"When you say you are appealing a case, it does not mean that you do not show remorse but rather you disagree with the conclusion of the magistrate and therefore you appeal. It is allowed by the Constitution of South Africa," he said.

Despite the looming sentence, Malema struck a resolute tone, saying the sentence will not deter him from the vision of the EFF.

"They can imprison me, but they can never imprison my ideas. They will never suppress the idea of economic freedom in our lifetime," he said.
