JOHANNESBURG - The Free State Health Department has confirmed three cases of malaria in the Xhariep District.

All three patients are from the same household on a farm in the Luckhoff area.

Tragically, a 53-year-old man has died, while a woman, and a 23-year-old man remain in stable condition.

They are being treated at a private hospital in Bloemfontein.

Officials say none of the patients recently traveled to malaria-endemic regions, raising suspicions of odyssean malaria.

This is likely from a mosquito transported from an infected area.
