Three days later and the Table Mountain Fire rages on

CAPE TOWN - It’s been three days since wildfires in the Silvermine area of Table Mountain started.

Now the Table Mountain National Parks manager Megan Taplin says preliminary investigations point to malicious intent.

This however, is yet to be confirmed as investigations continue.

"Investigations point to malicious intent that someone intentionally started the fire in three different places on Friday evening. But we will only be able to conclude investigations once the area is safe for us to go in again," she said.

Efforts continue to extinguish the wildfires.

The fire that broke out on Friday is now being fuelled by strong winds and residents in Tokai have been forced to evacuate.

To date, at least 120 firefighters have deployed to extinguish the blaze.

This group takes over from the 250 deployed Sunday.

Also in place are four helicopters working simultaneously to put out the fire.

Taplin says they have resorted to closing off hiking and mountain biking trails in the Tokai and Silvermine areas.

She urges residents to abide by this decision to close the trails, as they work on containing the fire.
