Traffic volumes expected to surge on routes leading out of Durban

DURBAN - As traffic steadily builds up on the roads, authorities are urging motorists to obey the rules of the road, remain patient, and prioritise safety.

Authorities are urging caution on the roads, noting that over 150 motorists have already been arrested for various traffic violations.

Road safety operations will continue throughout the period to help ensure that both departing and returning travellers reach their destinations safely.

KZN Transport MEC spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya said fatigue and reckless driving remain key concerns and the main causes of accidents during peak travel periods.

“We are encouraging motorists to check their vehicles before embarking on such long trips, but all in all, we are quite happy with how the motorists have behaved themselves, especially visitors to the province of KwaZulu-Natal who have been well behaved, with the exception of just a few.

“As we indicated over the past couple of days, the highly efficient team for Road Traffic Inspectorate is all over the province of KwaZulu-Natal, just ensuring that our visitors are safe and that reckless motorists are removed from our roads.”
