JOHANNESBURG - South Africa has opened up its rail network to private sector players.
Last week Transport Minister Barbara Creecy announced that 11 private sector operators had been awarded slots conditionally to run trains, effectively ending Transnet’s monopoly on the rail network.
Infrastructure on South Africa’s once-thriving rail network has declined for decades leading to many freight carriers having to use roads, increasing traffic and damage.
The Executive Director of the Centre for Risk Analysis, Chris Hatting discussed this with eNCA.
