TRC Inquiry postpones Zuma testimony pending recovery

JOHANNESBURG - The TRC Cases Inquiry will wait until Jacob Zuma is well enough to testify.

The former president is taking time to rest after a hospital stay for what his party calls fatigue.

Meanwhile, it has said Thabo Mbeki is fully cooperating with the commission.

This is despite his multiple attempts to have Chair Sisi Khampepe removed.

The inquiry is looking into claims of political interference to block prosecutions of apartheid-era crimes.

Inquiry spokesperson, Lionel Adendorf, said Monday will be an important day of testimony.

" Tomorrow is an important day. I need to stress that it is, obviously the president because of the time period where the TRC cases inquiry our terms of reference start. It is important that we had to have the president on the stand. Unfortunately our work has been delayed by the review application to the Johannesburg High Court and then the Constitutional Court.

"But here we are. Finally, we will have former president on the stand and we have his cooperation. There was no subpoena issued. He generously and graciously offered to assist us as well as former president Zuma. Our evidence leaders have been in contact with his lawyers.

"We do have an arrangement to interview him at a time when he is much better and able to travel and take the stand. And we hope that we can agree on that urgently. The agreement between our evidence leaders and the legal representatives for former president Jacob Zuma has agreed that it would be done within our timeframe."
