Truck torched after service delivery protests in Eastern Cape

BAYLAND - Electricity protests have turned violent at Bayland in Nelson Mandela Bay.

Residents of the informal settlement are demanding electrification of the area.

They torched a truck and disrupted traffic. They claim they've made repeated pleas to the municipality, only to receive empty promises.

eNCA's Nceba Ntlanganiso reports that the city is now promising to appoint a contractor to get the work done.

An amount of R6-million has been set aside for the electrification of Bayland.

Ziyanda Mqokoyi from the municipality says the project will run in stages once a contractor is appointed.

But, residents say they won't back down until they see workers on site.
