Two Daveyton pupils drown during school outing

JOHANNESBURG - Two pupils from Daveyton Skills School in Benoni drowned yesterday during a discipline camp at Hennops River in Centurion.

It's alleged that one of the pupils suddenly ran towards a river near the campsite entrance after activities concluded.

A second pupil followed in an attempt to bring him back. Unfortunately, the pair drowned as a result.

But incidents like this are a regular occurrence. In January this year, grade 7 Laerskool Queenswood pupil, Latoya Temilton, drowned during a school trip.

Then, in May last year, two young schoolgirls lost their lives at an unpatrolled beach in Amanzimtoti while returning from a career expo.

In another case, two Hoërskool Birchleigh pupils drowned at a Durban beach after a rugby tournament in March 2022.

And preceding this, is the death of Parktown Boys’ High School pupil Enock Mpianzi during a camp at Crocodile River in early 2020.

These deaths have sparked debate around safety measures at teaching facilities across the country.
