UFS to scrap AI detection software across all faculties

JOHANNESBURG - The University of the Free State said it's working to reduce student anxiety by introducing a new learning management system.

The institution will also scrap AI detection software across all faculties from July.

This marks a major shift in its approach to academic integrity amid growing concerns over the reliability and fairness of these tools.

UFS's Professor Francois Strydom said many of the lecturers welcome the move.

"I think taking away a culture of anxiety and the need to hide things, rather than a culture that's open and transparent and confronts the future head-on, is what we would like.

"But we're actually rolling out a new learning management system that integrates our tutors. These tutors don't give you the answers, but they focus more on the process of learning. That is the leading edge in this work in the world now that you don't focus so much on the product but on how you help students understand their own learning."
