DURBAN - ANC volunteers in eThekwini are now afraid to continue campaigning after two party members were shot dead in Umgababa, south of Durban.
Supporters were conducting door-to-door campaigning as part of an ANC Women's League programme when three unknown men opened fire.
The regional convenor, Thabani Nyawose, said the motive for the shooting remains unclear but believes the group’s coordinator may have been targeted.
"Our coordinator was targeted. At this point in time, we don't know what the motive was. But we hope that police will investigate this. Because it looks like now ANC volunteers, they are scared. From today, it will be difficult for them to continue to conduct in this area," he said.
Nyawose said political parties deserve to campaign freely in all wards without any fear or intimidation.

"This is very unfortunate incident, and we hope that police will follow up, investigate and arrest these criminals. Because as long as these people are not arrested, it will be difficult for political parties, not only the ANC, to run campaign. But we have lot of questions," he said.
Police in KwaZulu-Natal said they have opened two counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder.
Two people, a man and a woman were declared dead at the scene, and one woman reportedly injured her leg when she was fleeing from the assassins.
The two bodyguards fled the scene and are yet to be found.
The motive for the killing is still unknown however, authorities said they can't rule out a political motive for the shooting.
