US House Speaker election remains deadlocked

The US House of Representatives limped to an adjournment after conservative hardliners blocked establishment favorite Kevin McCarthy from becoming speaker

WASHINGTON - Three days later and still no Speaker.

The US House of Representatives has once again failed to reach a consensus and elect a new Speaker.

The last time this happened was 100 years ago.

Kevin McCarthy was unable to garner the required votes in the Republican-controlled House.

Twenty hardliners from the party are refusing to vote for him.

McCarthy has lost six times in the past 48 hours to Democrat Hakeem Jeffries, who also lacks the required majority.

He's now had to negotiate with Republican party members and make concessions in order to try and swing votes his way.

McCarthy can only afford to lose four votes.
