Vandals savage Eastern Cape school

KUGOMPO CITY - Pupils at Hlokoma High School in the Eastern Cape continue to face a bleak future ahead of their matric exams.

eNCA has exposed the harsh realities faced by pupils who have been plunged into darkness for years, with the school's electricity infrastructure vandalised.

After our visit last month, the Eastern Cape Education Department met with school management to address the crisis, but it seems nothing has changed.

Hlokoma High School management said it is struggling to encourage its matric pupils to be positive ahead of their exams.

Hlokoma High School matric pupils traditionally gather for study camps ahead of their end-of-year exams and as those fast approach, they are likely to use candles and torches to study, because their classrooms are still without electricity.

The problems faced at Hlokoma are nothing new in communities of Mdantsane, where criminals continue to target schools, hoping never to be caught in the act.
