JOHANNESBURG - A former mayor and former manager of Elias Motsoaledi Municipality have been granted bail of R30,000 each.
Julia Mathebe and Minah Maredi have been charged in connection with the VBS Mutual Bank scandal.
They were arrested in Groblersdal in Limpopo and appeared in the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court.
Mathebe is the current mayor of Sekhukhune District Municipality.
The two are facing charges of corruption, money laundering and contravention of the Municipal Finance Management Act as well as the Banks Act.
The municipal manager is said to have been instrumental in investing R190-million in VBS.
The investigation suggests the mayor received cash, accommodation and flight tickets worth over R300,000.
The matter will be back in court in March.
