Violent protest forces CPUT to close all campuses

CAPE TOWN - All of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology's campuses have been shut with immediate effect.

Management took that drastic step on Tuesday. In a statement, the university said the decision was taken after a building on the Bellville campus was set alight on Monday.

This has created concerns around student safety.

As a result, it has called on the student leadership to return to the negotiation table and stop the violence.

Protests were sparked by a proposed financial recovery plan that would've required students to pay up to R7 000 at registration next year.

The University Council has since withdrawn the plan.

But students want an urgent investigation into the institution’s finances and for the Vice-Chancellor to step down.
