Water and Sanitation Department allays corruption fears

JOHANNESBURG - As funds are diverted towards supplying cholera-hit Hammanskraal with safe drinking water, there are concerns that corruption could intercept the funds.

But Deputy Water and Sanitation Minister Judith Tshabalala says there are measures in place to ensure the funds are used as intended.

She said, "We have noted that a number of corrupt activities happened over time on the procurement side. That's why through the task team that Minister Mchunu has evoked, we do have Treasury with us, we have the DBSA that we have approached to ensure that the DBSA is the implementing agency, and that way we're able to curb the procurement processes."

"The checks in balances are also a priority because indeed we don't want a situation where we have corrupt elements that are coming in and stealing the money, so those checks and balances because we're with Treasury on this initiative, we're quite confident that they will ensure that we just don't throw money but that money is being made for better use, but an important one is that the Department of Water and Sanitation in the task team is the one that it going to be in charge, in terms of handling with other officials from the city in terms of ensuring that that does not happen."
