"We are inundated with flies" | Pikitup casual workers' protest leads to overflowing bins

JOHANNESBURG - Police are investigating the burning of Pikitup waste collection trucks in Diepsloot.

Johannesburg MMC of Environment and Infrastructure, Jack Sekwaila, says the arson comes after an agreement was reached with striking workers.

Residents around Randburg remain with bins full of garbage.

Ward 101 councillor Ralf Bittkau says this has been happening for the past three weeks.

Pikitup casual workers are demanding permanent employment.

Bittkau says this is affecting both the health and the pockets of residents.

They're still paying refuse rates despite the non-collection.
