JOHANNESBURG - A year ago today, the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry was established to investigate allegations of criminality and corruption in South Africa’s criminal justice system.
Since then, the Inquiry has heard extensive evidence and seen senior law enforcement officials arrested.
Commission Chair Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga said the revelations have exposed serious weaknesses in the justice system and could help drive reforms to prevent similar criminality.
“With such a criminal justice system, those criminals who exert undue improper influence on state functionaries will rarely, if ever, answer for their criminal deeds.
“To ask rhetorically over the years how many such criminals have escaped facing criminal charges and sanctions. With the revelations that are coming out, we trust that justice will be served.”
Madlanga said he trusts that the Commission's work, in the end, will yield results that will play a “meaningful role towards putting in place mechanisms that will help significantly towards curbing a recurrence of apparent criminality” that has emerged before the Commission.
