‘We want the mastermind’ - Deokaran family

JOHANNESBURG - Who paid for the hit on Babita Deokaran?

That's the question that continues to plague the family and friends of the anti-corruption whistleblower.

Today marks five years since Deokaran was gunned down outside her home.

She was killed for uncovering suspicious and irregular payments at Tembisa Hospital, totalling over R850 million.

Her work helped expose what became a much larger corruption scandal.

Her brother, Rakesh Deokaran, said their focus is not on the people already in the dock for her murder.

"We are not interested in the six arrested. We want the mastermind. A hitman doesn't hire himself. It's unfortunate that, five years later, by her not being here, they thought it was the end. Unfortunately for them, we did not stay quiet,” he said.
