Western Cape farms devastated by floods

JOHANNESBURG - The Western Cape Agriculture Department is worried about the citrus harvest and farming communities locked in towns.

That's as heavy rains continue to lash the province and are forecast to continue for two more days.

Agriculture MEC Ivan Meyer says the floods have left farming communities on the West Coast in dire straights.

The communities in question were also hard-hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and drought.

"The farming communities in this area just came out of Covid-19 which had a huge negative impact on argiculture in this region and then it was followed by the implications of the war in Ukraine, massive negative knockon effect on the production capability of agriculture," he said.
