CAPE TOWN - There is a new sheriff in town and he goes by the name of Lieutenant General Sizakhele Dyantyi.
Dyantyi succeeds Thembisile Patekile as Western Cape Police Commissioner.
He has over 30 years of experience in the police force.
His appointment comes at a time when the province is faced with almost weekly mass shootings as part of deadly gang violence.
The top cop said his main priorities include regaining the trust of communities and expanding the fight against extortion and gangsterism.
The appointments of new Provincial Commissioners in the Western Cape, North West, Limpopo, and Mpumalanga form part of the ongoing efforts to strengthen leadership within the South African Police Service.
